Celebrating a friend’s birthday on a gorgeous spring day is a great way to happen upon another subtly unique version of huevos rancheros. Nob Hill Bar & Grill does it deliciously in their local “upscale joint” way. We may be the celebrity sightings of the day, enjoying our brunch on the covered patio.
A colorful plate of food begins with soft corn tortillas draped with perfect eggs, borracho black beans, hashbrowns, red and green chiles, cheese, and a lively garnish of lettuce, tomato, onion, and red peppers- like a cherry on top. The borracho beans are very tasty, made with beer in addition to added spices. Hashbrowns are cooked nicely with a bit of crisp. The red pepper detail on the garnish creates a very different taste than typical huevos rancheros. I’m not completely sold on it, but I appreciate the detail.
The green chile is a sweet, smoky, and medium spiced sauce with a muted green color and chopped green chiles. The red chile is deeper, smooth, just as smoky, also with a sweetness, but with a spice that lingers less than the green. The 2 merge into each other, and the rest of the food, nicely. Overall, these huevos have an altogether sharp taste.
A giant flour tortilla is served on the side. With specialty cocktails, fresh coffee, and dizzying desserts, we are full to the brim and happy with today’s brunch at Nob Hill Bar & Grill a la the excuse of birthday.
